It is of the utmost importance that all personnel employed with Direct & Correct Inc. meet all safety standards and adhere to all company policies. All employees are required to follow all policies at all times, no matter the employees position or length of employment. Due to the dangerous nature of traffic control, all company policies are strictly enforced. Remember that everyone’s individual professionalism and positive attitude are what will make you, and this company, successful.

Disciplinary Actions *

Most infractions are counted on a “three-strike” rule. More serious violations, especially regarding safety, may cause a warning to not be given and a suspension or immediate termination may be warranted. Serious infractions may include but are not limited to walking away from your post on a working job site, anyway endangering other employees or personnel on a site, being under the influence of a controlled substance or alcohol. These ‘strikes’ can be counted as an infraction for any and all broken runs so if you break two separate rules you can still be counted on your second strike, that is at the discretion of office personnel.

No Call, No Show, No Job *

If you fail to report to your scheduled position at your scheduled time without calling the office, we assume that you have quit. You will not be hired back with our company after not calling and not showing up for work. We understand that emergencies happen, if something happens call the office and let us know that you will not be able to make it to work.

Transportation *

In order to be hired on by our company, you must have transportation. Transportation is also required for continued employment. Not having transportation is not an excuse for not going to work. It is your responsibility to maintain a valid driver’s license, valid automobile insurance, a reliable vehicle and fuel in said vehicle. If it is found that you do not have one of the above you will be taken off the schedule. Remember, job sites can sometimes be more than an hour from your residence, we recommend ‘car-pooling’ when possible.

Attire *

All employees are required to have their own ‘flagging equipment’ before you are allowed to be hired with us. It is your responsibility to ensure that equipment makes it to the job site with you and is maintained in a serviceable condition so that you may safely perform your job. All of this equipment may be purchased either from the company office or many other locations throughout the state. All of your equipment must meet or exceed the guidelines as stated in the DE and MD revisions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Please note that modifying your equipment in any way my void it’s retro-reflectivity class certifications and will need to be replaced.

Flagging equipment includes: Class III ANSI Vest, Orange Hard Hat, Closed Toe Shoes or Boots, Safety Glasses (Tinted or Clear), Class E ANSI Flagging Pants, Retro-Reflective Stop/Slow Paddle, 2-Way Radio w/ Extra Batteries, Time Sheets, Lunch Box/Cooler, Water, State ID and ATSSA Certification Cards/ State Certification Cards.

All equipment is to be kept serviceable, meaning clean and functioning. Clothing should be free of tears and excessive dirt that would hamper the visibility.

Cell Phones *

Cellular phones are extremely distracting and you being distracted increases the chance of causing an accident. For this reason, the use of a cellular phone or device while on jobs is strictly prohibited. The only time a cell phone may be used is if you are either communicating with the office or for emergencies. This includes talking, texting, using headphones or Bluetooth, listening to music, the internet and any and all other way a cell phone may be used. Cell phones can be used on breaks as long as you are away from the road and work in progress – Do not stand inside a closure talking on your phone. All employees are required to keep their cell phones in working order at all times so that the office may contact them.

Drugs and Alcohol *

Being under the influence of or possessing any alcohol, drugs or other controlled substance that may alter your job performance is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated. We, as a company, have a vital interest to maintain a work environment that promotes the health, welfare and safety of it’s employees. Being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol poses unacceptable safety and health risks to everyone on the job site. We have enacted and will carry out reasonable measures for ensuring a drug free workplace. Random drug and alcohol tests can and will be performed. Any employee who tests positive will be required to enroll and pass a state approved drug/alcohol class at the employee’s expense. The employee will be removed from the schedule until she/he has completed and passed the class. If an employee is suspected of being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol while on a job site, said employee will be removed from the site and be required to take a urinalysis within two hours. If the employee tests positive, immediate termination can result. Failure to submit a urinalysis will be grounds for immediate termination.

The possession, transfer, manufacture, distribution, sale or use of alcohol and/or drugs is not permitted on our premises or job sites. Any employee violating this policy will be subject to immediate termination without warning. We recognize that chemical dependency is a serious health problem and encourage employees to seek assistance for such problems.

General Rules *

Be polite and professional to all co-workers, inspectors, foreman, other company’s employees, supervisors, inspectors, engineers, passing motorists, pedestrians and anyone else you may encounter throughout your shift. You are representing the company and everyone else with the company.

Constantly having a bad attitude and/or creating a hostile work environment will result in disciplinary action. You are the face of the company and are expected to act in a positive manner.

Do not show up at the office without calling and making an appointment, unless you are dropping off time sheets or notes into the black mailbox.

Always bring food and water with you to the job site. Flaggers are not required to have a lunch break when it is detrimental to public safety. On most job sites, you will be able to have a break but always be prepared. You will not be given extra breaks because you failed to stop at the store on the way to the job site or the night before. Ensure you take all trash with you when leaving your post.

If you are dismissed from a job site within the first 4 hours, call the office and let them know. If not all flaggers are being sent home, talk to the senior flagger on site to see if you should be the one going home. Break all flaggers before leaving and the flaggers with the most hours that week should be the one leaving first.

All employees should be at the job site 15 minutes before the start time so that you have time to get yourself and equipment together and be in position. You are required to be in your position with all equipment, ready to work at the start time. If everyone is not there within 10 minutes of the start time, call the office. This gives the office time to send a replacement if necessary. It is the MOT or senior flagger’s responsibility to ensure the office knows when the meeting spot for a job/crew is changing.

If the contractor is not there 30 minutes after the start time, call the office. If a job is cancelled and the contractor fails to notify the office, you will receive a “show up time” of normally 2 hours.

Payday *

Pay day is scheduled for Friday every week. If you are not working on pay day, call the office at 9AM that morning to find out when you can come pick up your check. Do not show up at the office without calling first. If you are working on pay day, call the office once your job is done to find out when you can get your check. When picking up your check, anyone you have with you must stay in the vehicle.

Pay Rates *

Pay rates vary from $10.00 and up depending on the length of time that you are with the company and job performance. On prevailing rate projects, everyone will make the prevailing rate set forth by the state. If you want to ask the inspector or foreman what the prevailing rate is on a project, you are free to do so as long as it does not interfere with the job. If you are ever on a job with any company and you are not being paid the prevailing wage by your employer, contact the Department of Labor.

Profanity *

The use of profanity will not be tolerated for anyone. Be courteous to all contractors, co-workers and motorists. However, be firm on all points of safety and directions. Do not involve yourself in or instigate confrontations. Just because a person uses profanity towards you does not give you the right to use it back. Be polite and professional at all times. Do not engage in verbal or physical confrontations with anyone as the are not worth your time, energy or job.

Reporting Hours *

You are to call the office every Wednesday at the end of the day’s work to report your hours for the week, up to that point. When calling in your hours you will receive your schedule for Thursday. If you do not call in your hours on Wednesday, you will not be scheduled for Thursday.

All overtime must be preapproved. If you know you are going to go over 40 hours, you must call the office. Do not wait until you are at 39 hours to call in, do so before.

Safety *

Report any potential safety hazards to the senior flaggers, job foreman and/or inspector. If it is not taken care of and is still causing a safety issue, call the office. Do not ride in the back of equipment, you may ride in the cabs of vehicles only. Never turn your back to oncoming traffic or opposing flaggers. Do not lean against drums, vehicles or equipment, signs or anything else while on a job site. You must stand upright so that you remain visible and aren’t hit/run over by whatever you might be leaning against. You may not use a drums, cone or anything else to hold up your stop/slow paddle for you. You may not sit down while flagging. Do not turn your back to traffic or your back toward the flagger on the opposing end of a lane closure (Stand perpendicular to the road).

Scheduling *

Always call the office between 6PM and 7PM for your following day’s schedule. Only office personnel can set the schedule. Do not call another employee to work your shift, if you need time off contact the office only. If there are any problems or confusion with the schedule, call the office. Not calling between 6PM and 7PM for your schedule is grounds for a write up. If you do not call twice in a row for your schedule we assume that you have quit. Do not leave a message on the office phone between 6PM and 7PM, just hang up and call back. Any other times you may leave a message. Everyone is to be on the job site 15 minutes prior to the start time so that you have time to get your equipment and self together, you need to be on the road at the start time – not still getting yourself together because you were late or sat in your car too long.

Sexual Harrassment *

It is our policy to ensure an environment free from all forms of discrimination, including sexual harassment. Sexual harassment has been defined as the following types of conduct, engage in by either male or female employees towards another employee regardless of sex: unsolicited and unwelcome sexual overtures and conduct; either verbally or physically, or other behavior that is unwelcome and/or personally offensive such that it lowers morale and creates and intimidating or hostile working environment. It is against company policy for any person to insinuate that another person’s wages, hours or other terms or conditions of employment will be adversely affected by that employee’s refusal to submit to sexual advances.

Smoking *

No smoking is permitted near flammable liquids or when safety dictates. When smoking is allowed, do not leave your trash or ‘butts’ on the ground. Littering is illegal.

Time Sheets *

Time sheets must be properly filled out, by the Direct & Correct representative (You), with your first and last name, contractor, location, date and contract number/ job number. You must also list the time you arrived at the job site. Time started, end time and total hours must be filled out properly on the time sheet for all employees. Foreman’s first and last name is to be printed beside “FOREMAN”. The foreman is also to sign the bottom of the time sheet. Failure to have the time sheet filled out completely and correctly can cause a delay in you getting paid because time cannot be entered until all the information is gathered. Time sheets are to be turned in on pay day and no later than the Saturday of that week. Do not show up on a job site without time sheets as you cannot get paid without a filled out and signed time sheet. If a job is cancelled, write down the time the foreman told you they are cancelling.

Transportation *

You are required to have your own reliable transportation to and from the job site. “No Transportation” is not an excuse for not being able to go to work. It is 100% your responsibility to ensure you have the means to get to work. If you are sharing transportation/carpooling and one person calls out, it will not excuse you from not showing up or being late to the job site. Remember that schedule changes do occur and you need to ensure you are always prepared to get to work without depending on others.
